Today is the nine week mark since Nick’s accident. I look forward to a time when this is all just a faded memory. When I can’t recall how many weeks it’s been.
This morning we celebrated such a momentous occasion by visiting his spine surgeon. Alright! His next surgery is scheduled for August 18. That’s four weeks from now. We are, of course, not happy about this. We want it done tomorrow. Or better yet, we want it done last week. But the surgeons and their schedulers aren’t budging. So August 18 it is! That gives us four weeks to focus on strength and flexibility. The goal is to build up strength as much as possible, and try not to slip backwards very far while he’s recovering from the next surgery.
During this next surgery the plan is to approach the anterior column and build a metal cage where his L5 vertebrae shattered. They will fill the cage with his own bone, either from the vertebrae fragments presently there, or from his hip, or both. They may even use cadaver bone. He already has cadaver bone in his wrist, so what’s a little more?? They will then fuse the L5 cage with S1 below and L4 above. But since L4 was badly broken as well, it may not provide enough support. If during surgery they discover this is the case, they will then build a second cage for L4 as well, and fuse the set to L3 above. This will essentially make those few vertebrae one solid bone. After that heals completely, his spine should be the absolute strongest it could possible be after such a traumatic injury. We’re hoping for Rambo strength as he has no plans of slowing down once he’s up and at it again.
We have another appointment today as well, to check out a different Prosthetist. This guy is in Murrieta, which is significantly more convenient than seeing a guy in Redlands. I hope he knocks our socks off! Well, my socks anyway. Nick doesn’t have any.
