Nick and I just had an accidental encounter with a real charming fellow. On the way back from a quick run to the bank, we stopped at a local bakery for a sandwich. While sitting there, a young dude in a chair wheeled in. Of course, we got to talking. He had been shot in ‘95 and is now paralyzed. What struck me most was that those were the only details he told us about his accident. And that’s only because Nick asked. We spent the next fifteen minutes talking about what he loves to do. What he’s passionate about. He’s a comedian and a barber, and regularly goes to all the comedy venues in So Cal to perform. His eyes really lit up while talking about it. Now THAT is what I like to see. He does not allow his injury to define him, unlike many other disabled people we’ve met these last two months. And this injury will certainly not define Nick either.
