Nick Fener is in a fine mood in his head, but you wouldn’t know it (unless you were him…or me) by looking at him or interacting with him. He is walking a tight rope between extreme pain and totally comatose, and keeps falling off of it to one side or the other. The doctors have completely changed around his pain medicines everyday for the last three days. This makes it very difficult to stay on top of the doses and schedules and to keep the nurses accountable. This also makes it very difficult to pinpoint exactly what will work for a more long-term pain management strategy. We need to figure it out soon. He has refused PT for the last three days because of extreme pain and fatigue. Understandably so, but I know there’s a solution out there. We just need to discover it. A solution other than just waiting for the healing. He needs to be working on strength now, slowly, in order to prevent further atrophy and possible complications. He has some TheraBands that he’s using in bed to work the muscles in his arms, shoulders, lats and chest. This is imperative. Upper body strength will prove to be the key to his mobility while he’s waiting for his prostheses over the next few months.
But more importantly, much more importantly actually, I combed the nasty, matted dread locks out of his hair. Now we can finally be seen in public together again.
